Tell us a bit about yourself and what you're up to now

I’m an ex-Olympic swimmer and engineer, and got into sales for 2 reasons: I love bonding with new people and working towards challenging goals. I thrive in startups and chaos, and I like to bring well defined processes. My work at Talentware focuses on bringing a skill-based approach to HR, making their processes more meritocratic. Outside of work, I enjoy personal finance, sports and ice-cream (in no particular order)

What was your journey into a career in Tech Sales

I worked as a mechanical engineer and in strategy, but always felt like I wanted to found a tech startup eventually. I figured I’d need either coding skills or sales skills. I chose the second since I enjoy creating relationships more than writing code (although I’ve a nerdy side) and I’m very competitive. Getting into sales was not a clear choice for me as soon as I started working, but something I’ve worked towards by trying a bunch of new things, talking to people, and connecting the dots (what I like to do & what I’m good at)

What would you say are the best things about working in Tech Sales

Tech is the environment that shifts most quickly, so this means adaptability and quick-thinking are two of the most important skills; this also means fast-growing careers, solid earnings, meeting great people, and developing skills that help in life. Tech also tends to be a meritocratic industry, where goals define success, which is something I’ve lived by as a professional swimmer

What advice would you give to someone who is just about to start their career in sales

Being coachable, hungry and resilient are the most important qualities. If you’re just starting out, look for someone that you can learn from instead of shiny companies, and bring these qualities with you. Remember that listening is key, but so is trusting yourself and always using critical thinking.

Why did you decide to join Tangent as a Mentor and why should others join as Mentors too

I’ve always had to “figure it out” by myself, and while this helped me, I’ve made many mistakes along the way and some experiences led me nowhere. I want to be the mentor I wish I had, and I think it’s an incredible opportunity for all parties involved to grow and learn
